A new painting

My blogging friend, Smitha Vishwanath, started painting at the beginning of the pandemic last year. I have been watching her improve and stretch her creative wings with oil paints and watercolours and I am amazed by her progress and talent.

A couple of months ago, one of her paintings caught my eye and I bought it from her. Smitha was very obliging and arranged for the painting to be couriered to South Africa from Mumbai in India.

This painting of a group of barren trees in the snow really spoke to me.

I chose this painting as I love the contrast of the stark and bare trees in their snowy setting with the rising sun. The darkness of the tree trunks and branches and the bluey greys of the snow and shadows make the gorgeous brightness of the yellowy sun creeping up into the sky all the more warm and inviting. This picture makes me feel happy and reminds me that winter and hard times always end and the sun and warmth always returns.

  10. This is a beautiful painting. I can see why you’d want to have it where you can see it every day. It’s similar to a New England winter scene, with the New England color palette being on the cooler side of the spectrum.

    1. Hi Tandy, no, it was sent framed which is really nice. I have a lot of art too, but I have chosen it all although Terence gives it to me as gifts. I have very exacting taste with art and it is the exact opposite of his taste. He only has one painting that I bought for him. It is a landscape of table mountain and the ocean.

    2. Thank you so much Maura for appreciating the painting. It makes me happy to know that it gave you a respite from the heat. I found art tedious too when I picked it up on previous occasions…I disliked the job of cleaning up brushes but something clicked for me and art during the lockdown.

    2. Thank you, Jim for the appreciation. Robbie is one of the most supportive people I know- I have no idea how she manages to do so much for all bloggers amidst everything else she does. And while we do have a lot in common ( including how we feel on many issues), I haven’t been able to figure out how she gets 48 hours of work done in 24!
