Book 2 of Robbie Cheadle’s Sir Chocolate series features Sir Chocolate and Lady Sweet in a hunt to find a lost baby cookie monster. As well as the story, we learn how to make a selection of delicious recipes, including Easy Sausage Rolls and Chocolate Butter Icing.
I bought the paperback version of this charming children’s book mainly because the Kindle format of picture books rarely reproduce the images satisfactorily (though to be fair I didn’t look at the ebook version, so can’t say for sure). The story is in rhyme and tells of the search for the missing Baby Cookie Monster, including a trip in a chocolate cake car and characters such as the Vanilla Fudge Bird.
The pictures of all the edible characters show up well and compliment the story. The recipes too, are delightful and are laid out in a way that makes them easy to understand for young kids.
Robbie Cheadle started writing these books when her son Michael came up with ideas for the characters. Robbie’s website is a great resource for cooks and kids, as it includes videos of some of her other recipes as well as tutorials on fondant art and mouth-watering images of the World of Sir Chocolate. Too yummy indeed!

This book will be a delightful read for a child, and their adult companions for that matter. A brightly coloured cast of characters, with Sir Chocolate himself created from one of the most favourite treats of all time. Ten year old Michael Cheadle came up with the idea of this charasmatic character and also his lovely Lady Sweet. Robbie not only creates these characters from fondant icing, but composes the story in verse that takes us on this current adventure.
From a conservation perspective it is wonderful to see a children’s story that gently introduces the subject of creatures who are at risk, and whilst the villain of this piece is a greedy snail, there are parallels with our own encroachment into nature. However, the colourful fondant snail with long fangs is monster enough for this fairy story. The other characters include sweet pink and apricot sugar mice, a cluster of endearing yellow and black sugar dough bees and very elegant fruit drop fairies.
In between the verses and illustrations are other gems in the form of recipes which are easy for both children (and some of us less proficient bakers) to make. Terrific Cheese Bread, Delightful Butter Biscuits, Jammy Scones, Rainbow Cupcakes, and one that will be made very shortly Bold Banana Bread.
This book may do little to reduce your waistline, but for children it will stimulate their imaginations and lead to some wonderful baking sessions with parents and grandparents.

I wasn’t sure what to expect from Robbie Cheadle’s Sir Chocolate and the Condensed Milk River Story and Cookbook, but it still took me by surprise.
Firstly, the illustrations (made from fondant and cakes) are incredible and enhance the narrative so skilfully. I got quite hungry just looking at the photographs and that was before I even got to the recipes.
I thought the rhyme scheme was very well maintained making the book good for slightly older reluctant readers as well as enhancing the vocabulary of younger readers. I don’t know if it was deliberate, but I really liked the concept of trolls saving the day. They are usually seen as negative and violent creatures and I felt the underlying message of being helpful and not judging others by appearances was perfectly pitched.
I really enjoyed the whole creativity of this book, not just from the imaginative story set in a land where all things can be eaten, but I loved the accessible recipes and the poem It’s A Boy, which came as a surprise and a more adult element to the book, too.
Sir Chocolate and the Condensed Milk River Story and Cookbook is a feel good, creative book that can be enjoyed on many levels by both adults and children of all ages alike.

In one of their newer books, Sir Chocolate and the Sugar Crystal Caves story and cookbook, Robbie Cheadle and her children take us on an extraordinary journey to the sugar crystal caves which are in danger of melting. A cute book with yummy characters, all hand-made cake decorations!
I was very happy to discover this yummy little book on my Kindle, especially since I’ve heard so many great things about this series!
First I have to mention the illustrations, all look like delicious cake decorations and I just wanted to eat them all! I heard the author is a talented baker, now I have proof.
The story is written in sweet, short rhymes very easy to follow and they add a musicality to the story-line. We see cute elephants, lions, leopards, giraffes, rhinos, monkeys, and other animals. There is a little bit of mystery introduced but, no worries, Sir Chocolate saves the day!
This book is a gentle introduction to zoo animals and I can see it as a great way of involving the little ones in dialog or for holiday or school related activities.
Highly recommended.

I’m a huge fan of Dr. Suess, and the cadence and ryhming in the verse written by Robbie and Michael Cheadle is reminiscent of that found in the lovely books from Dr. Suess, so of course, I loved Chocolate Fudge saves the Sugar Dog. And then there is the beautiful illustrations created by the talented Robbie with fondant figurines making up the lovely scenes described in the verse, which let the story unfold before your eyes. (They may make you hungry too, because they look deliciously sweet.) One I found especially endearing is the scene for the actual rescue of the Sugar Dog, where Chocalate Fudge is emerged in the hot chocolate pond.
The extra added feature that the Cheadle books include which Dr. Suess never thought to include is the wonderful recipes, and the accompanying photo illustrations for each one are sure to make whet your appetite. Included in Chocolate Fudge saves the Sugar Dog, are recipes for scrumptious peanut butter cookies, delectable Oreo cupcakes, mouth-watering avacado and bacon scones, poured fondant icing, and chocolate chip shortbread dipped in chocolate. Yummy!
