Hi there, It is my pleasure to share with you this Mothers Day offering from Robbie Cheadle who blogs at https://robbiesinspiration.wordpress.com. …
ROBBIE CHEADLE’S MOTHERS DAY STORY
Thank you to Bernadette for sharing my Mothers Day recipe, Toad in the Hole. This series of posts about mothers and their favourite recipes is wonderful.
Yes, Mom’s dad was British and Irish, so while the food was English, it was always accompanied by Irish whiskey! BTW her mother was 100% German. We were raised with many marvelous food traditions.

Hi Darlene, it used to be a British staple. I’m not sure if many younger people cook now 🌼

Funnily enough, our Toad in the Hole recipe is just an egg fried in a hole in a slice of bread!

Hi Chel, that is interesting. I’ve never seen that done.

I looked it up. Apparently, some call my dish ‘Toad in the Hole,’ and others a variety of things from ‘Frog in the Hole’ to ‘Egg in a Basket.’

I’ve heard egg in a basket. I couldn’t think of it, but now I remember.

We call it a one eyed sandwich 😊

Interesting that your mum perfected a dish that she’d had poor experiences of in her childhood. I’ve never had toad in the hole, but bangers and mash was a frequent meal of my childhood.

Hi Norah, my mom’s mother was a poor cook so my mom never squired a taste for her Yorkshire pudding. She likes mine 😉

She’s fortunate to have you to cook for her. 💖

Still one of my favourite meals, Robbie. I had it last week, with new potatoes and peas. 🙂
Best wishes, Pete.

Nothing like home comfort food Robbie. Your Toad in the hole and bangers and mash sound very British, lol 🙂 xx

anyone is lucky to have you as a mom, Robbie! hmmm – why don’t American foods have fun names like toad…?
LikeLiked by 1 person
The name is rather horrible 🤣. Chel said that in Utah this name is used for an egg cooked inside a hole in a piece of bread.

Lovely story and tradition, Robbie. The recipe sounds delicious, and I was glad to learn that toads weren’t used in the recipe. 🙂 Happy Mother’s Day!
