My Growing Bookworms post this month discusses the benefits of day dreaming for children [and for adults too]. Thank you to Kaye Lynne Booth for hosting me.
When I was a little girl, I loved to day dream. I was one of those kids the teacher is always calling back from dream world. The recall to reality was always a little negative in my recollection. “Stop daydreaming, and concentrate on your maths/history/geography – fill in the blank.”
As I’ve grown older, I’ve realised the benefits of day dreaming and mental downtime. When my children were younger, I used to use the driving time into the office every day to day dream. It was a time for me to let my mind wander and relax. I discovered that poems would often pop into my head, more or less fully formed during this time. The inspiration would be something I saw on the way to work. For example, my poem “The Beggar’s Child” was inspired by a mother and baby I used to see standing on the curb everyday…

Thank you for sharing, Robbie, that you daydreamed as a child and still use it for your creative processes. I have to confess that I was always in my dreamworld making up stories as a child. And I still do!

That is a great thing, Wayne. I don’t get much time to day dream and I think it is a bad thing for me. It has impacted my poetry writing abilities a great deal.

Wonderful post, Robbie. I think a bit of day dreaming helps me fill in the blanks for my stories. I need to do more of it.

Thank you, Steve, I’m glad you enjoyed this post. Day dreaming is good for story telling. I wish I had more time for it. I plan my books in my head at night time.

Hi Jacqui, I am pleased to read this comment. I always knew intuitively that down time and day dreaming was vital for leaps of innovation, but I was surprised at how many benefits there are to day dreaming and how important it is.

I didn’t know until after my kids grew up. There is a lot of benefit to letting your mind wander.

Hi,
I enjoy daydreaming. I’ve always done it. It was my way of escaping into a better world, and it something I still do today.

Hi Kamal, I am glad you are also a day dreamer. It seems most writers and poets are.
