Tomorrow is Brad from Writing to Freedom blog’s 60th birthday. He is having a blog party in celebration and has invited to guests to join by writing a post about their muse. You can read about his party here: https://writingtofreedom.com/2021/05/26/celebrating-our-muses/
I have more than one muse and I have written about my writing muses before. Today, I am going to write about my fondant art muses. There are three, Flute, Toot, and Hoot and they conspire to help Michael and I think of fun ideas for our Sir Chocolate books illustrations and also for cakes for celebrations.
Flute, Toot, and Hoot are party clowns and they like celebrations, socialising, and having fun. Sadly, they have not reacted well to the pandemic and lockdown and after the first 6 weeks of lockdown in March and April 2020, when they helped inspire our Dinah in Wonderland cake and the Fondant cat parade, they upped and left for quite a long time.
They popped in at Christmas time and helped to inspire our Gingerbread and chocolate houses diorama, but they they disappeared again.
I thought we weren’t going to be able to have a cake for Terence’s birthday this year and they just were not playing ball but then suddenly, about a month ago, they popped up like three brightly coloured clowns – oh! they are brightly coloured clowns – he he! and inspired a summer beach cake.
Here is the dolphin and …
here is the boy in a sailing boat with the dolphin on the ocean.
Here is the entire cake with the windsurfer resting and considering the swells while the boy in the sailing boat and the dolphin go past.
Do you have a muse? Tell me about him/her in the comments.
I love all of these, but the dolphin is my favorite!

What a blast Robbie! You certainly invited the right muses for a party. Flute, Tute, and Hoot have the best names and creative baking talents. I wish I had put in a birthday cake order! Thanks for playing along with MuseFest2021!

Robbie – you have an extraordinary talent for sculpture. Have you ever thought about exploring this talent. I know you are super busy with your writing, blogging and connecting, but your detail work is remarkable.

HI Rebecca, thank you for you lovely comment. I used to do sculpture at school but haven’t revisited it for years. Maybe one day when I am no longer working, but until then, there just isn’t the time for anything extra. I have to test Michael on his history tonight, my least favourite section – the cold war.

Your fondant art is always so delightful to see, Robbie. If I have a blogging ‘muse’, then that must surely be Ollie, who gives me so much to write about with his antics and our dog-walks.
Best wishes, Pete.

Hi Diana, I must admit that I really enjoyed the Dinah in Wonderland cake and the fondant cat parade. So much fun. I need to think of something for father’s day, he doesn’t like fondant, so I have to make another sort of cake altogether, and then there is mom’s splendid birthday later in the year.

Hi Teri, an easy mistake to make. I had wanted to do an underwater scene too, but just ran out of time. This art work is fiddly and time consuming.

So clever Roberta! I loved the curly hair of the clowns. You must have immense patience!

Thank you, I made the clowns hair by pushing fondant through a sieve. It’s not that difficult actually, and it comes out really well.

HI Meeks, thank you. It was actually Teagan Geneviene who inspired this idea with your underwater party a while back. The idea has actually been loitering in my brain for a while.

What lovely and inspiring muses, Robbie. I’m not sure about muses, though. Nature tends to be inspiring for me, and sometimes, random conversations, but I love your sweet muses. And what a nice idea for Brad’s birthday!

Hi Olga, I think I have a different muse for every book I write to be honest. I always come up with the fondant figures before I write a Sir Chocolate book though. They always lead.

my current art muse is seeing how your food art gets better & better! I wonder — does fondant work much differently than marzipan?
LikeLiked by 1 person
Hi da-Al, I have worked with marzipan and it is not that different to fondant. Fondant is easier to colour and is more elastic so flowers are easier to make using fondant. Marzipan is not something we ever had in my youth and when I started cake decorating in 2004, everyone used fondant. I only realised that marzipan was an alternative much later in my learning.
