The death of a child
nature’s worst aberration
Quite impossible
to fully recover from
a broken circle of life

A parent’s worst nightmare! Children are not supposed to pass before their parents.

This is an excellent poem. The tanka form is well-suited to conveying the devastation of losing a child. Nature’s aberration has broken the circle of life. Nothing more need be said.

I don’t think a parent ever truly recovers from the loss of a child.

So tragic, Robbie. I can’t imagine the pain and have no doubt that one never fully recovers from such a loss. You captured the heartache beautifully.

Thank you, Diana. Sometimes I have panic attacks that I loss my Michael. There is mumps going around and the doctor has asked me to bring him in as they don’t know if his vaccination took due to his compromised immunity. I know he’ll be fine, but I still worry…

It sounds like you have a proactive healthcare team. Reassuring, though I know you worry. Hang in there, mom. 🙂

I suppose if you have other children, you have to try, Jacqui. A terrible thing to contemplate.

Our church has a yearly day of retreat for people who have lost a child. This poem is very accurate to their experience.

I agree, Robbie. No parent should need to bury a child, but it’s too often true. It has happened a few times in my family. Today, very sadly, four children – three from one family and another a cousin – were mowed down by a drunk driver as they walked along a footpath going for ice cream. There were other children in the group who were also injured, some critically. A mother and father lost three of their six children in one blow by the stupidity of one irresponsible driver. So sad.

Norah, this is such a tragic story. The loss of one child is an enormous blow, I don’t know how you ever recover from the loss of three and in such preventable circumstances.
