Carrot Ranch Literary Society is hosting its annual rodeo literacy contest. This first contest asks you to give a tall tale a modern bent. Don’t rely on the stories of Pecos Bill or 19th-century dime-store westerns. Go past the early sci-fi and detective stories of pulp fiction. Write a tall tale that is recognizable set in the present time.
Here is mine:
“It was as big as my hand. No, it was bigger. It was as big as your hand.”
“Come on, it couldn’t possibly be that big. This is one of your tall stories, isn’t it?”
“No, I promise you. It was huge with a great fat body and long hairy legs.”
Tom moved away from her, down the dark passage.
“EEEEEEEEEEEK! I stood on something revolting and crunchy.”
Judith turned on the light and saw the crushed body of the spider that her husband had mangled with his foot.
“Well, now you know it wasn’t a tall story.”
