Little Miss Christmas Cracker on the stage in Chocolate Land – I don’t have a picture of a red devil [smile]
When I was a little girl, I wanted to be a ballerina just like hundreds of other little girls all over the world. My mother, being a kind and understanding woman, indulged me in this desire and I attended ballet classes from when I was five years old.
When I was seven, I was a good enough ballerina to participate in the annual ballet concert hosted by my ballet school. My class of small girls were to perform the dance of the ladybird. I am sure you know the nursery rhyme which goes:
“Ladybird, ladybird,
Fly away home,
Your house is on fire
And your children all gone;
All except one
And that’s little Ann,
And she has crept under
The warming pan.”
When the great day arrived, my mother dressed me in my costume, which comprised of yellow tights, a yellow leotard, black ballet shoes, a red and black spotted “wings” cape and a headband with antennae attached to it, and did my hair in a ballet bun. When we arrived at the hall, I was very excited and I remember practicing outside on the grass with the other girls in my group in advance of our stage performance. It all went well and we left the stage in triumph with no-one having forgotten their steps or tripped over their shoe ribbons.
We were then allowed to watch the rest of the performances. One of the last dances was a solo dance by a girl in one of the highest grades. She did the dance of the red devil and she was amazing. I was totally overwhelmed by how well she danced and by her spectacular [in my eyes] costume. She wore red tights, a red leotard, a long red devil tail and had a pair of red horns on her head. I begged my mother to get me a red devil costume and she said she would try. Not long after that we moved away from Johannesburg and I never got my red devil outfit, but I have always remembered the solo dance of the red devil.
Maybe one day I will have a granddaughter and I will buy her a red devil outfit and we will learn the dance of the red devil together.
Love the story, your beautiful fondant work AND the devil dream ❤

A wonderful story, Robbie! In the past (as i was member of the clerical seminary) i had a red devil figure with a black cape in one window of my car. Lol Some of the priests weren’t very amused about. Lol Michael

I like the smile on the face of little Miss Christmas Cracker. May you have that granddaughter one day to dance with.

Thank you, Frank. I hope so too. Michael loved to dress up as Anakin Skywalker but that wasn’t quite the same.

What a lovely reminiscence, Robbie!
I learned Ballet at school and I was rather Avante gard, even then… My improvised piece at my first show, was me, being a mad scientist… 🤣

That sounds like fun, Ritu. I can imagine you dancing and acting, too.

What a lovely memory. Maybe you can do the dance of the red devil with your niece one day. It’s funny but I never aspired to be a ballerina. I was the conductor of the rhythm band when I was 6, though.

I had a string of things I wanted to be, Darlene, and none of them were accountant. I wanted to be an artist, a ballerina, an actress and a singer.

What a wonderful recollection, dear Robbie! A red devil dance sounds peculiar!

I think it was a bit unusual, Maria. That is probably why I was so taken with it.

🙂 True! However, you also are fond of extraordinary things & cakes!

Well, even Little Miss Christmas Cracker probably has a little devil in her. 😉 At least your performance went well! But… It’s never too late to get a red devil costume! 😈

That is true, it is never to late. I will be a granny in a red devil costume.

GRANNY!! Aren’t your kids still really young?? Let’s not get ahead of ourselves!! Plus, my mother was a “granny” at about 48. Sometimes “granny” doesn’t mean old! 😂🍻😈

For sure, some Granny’s are young. my oldest son is 16 so it is still a way off for me.

Love this story of inspiration, Robbie! Ballet is really difficult (my hips have no natural turn out, so no thanks) and to see it performed by a skilled dancer is breathtaking. It sounds like the perfect thing to do with your grand-dot!

It is another dream, Terri. I was always very taken with ballet and made my whole family attend for years. Now the boys are teenagers they have put their respective feet down firmly on ballet performances.

AI lovely memory Robbie. Not surprised it’s imprinted in your brain. The little girl in the red dress on your gorgeous cake could be a part of your memory?

Miss Christmas Cracker – maybe some of the inspiration for her came from that memory. You may well be right. Thanks Susan.

At the end of my grandson’s dance recital Saturday night a little girl all in red danced her heart out in a solo. Loved the serendipity of your post with that image in my mind already.

The dance sounds amazing, I wonder if that girl went on to have a dancing career. My sister, baby cousin and I were never interested in ballet, we all just wanted horses, my daughter did it for one term, but my cousin’s daughter and my grandaughter love doing ballet, we have no idea where they get it from!

I think sometimes, Janet, it depends on which sports and activities are popular among your friends. We all encourage each other to do things. I also rode horses for a number of years.

I did ballet for a while. Enjoyed it too. I was a fairy on stage once… One of the ones who got to dance with Tinkerbell in a Peter Pan performance. I didn’t end up doing ballet for long though.

Hi Tori, I didn’t do ballet for that long either. We move a short while later and I never went back to it in our new town.

My pleasure, Robbie! Beautiful and I love ballet and like you I started dancing at 3 years of age. I advanced to toe shoes at 12, but after that, I didn’t have anymore ballet lessons until I was 32 years old.. I still practice, but not on toe.

What a beautiful memory…My wish was to always dance in Giselle my favourite ballet..My hubby ever the comedian said he would take me and drop me off outside…then ducked…For Lily, it is Thai dancing which is also so very graceful 🙂 x

That is a beautiful ballet, Carol. My all time favourite is The Nutcracker. I have seen it on ice too. I am sure Thai dancing is lovely and I do think, as children, we like the things our friends enjoy.

Yes they do, Robbie and obviously Thai dancing is what the girls are taught here although some do Muay Thai Boxing and are very good at it….I like The Nutcracker suite also but Giselle was my first ballet and the first story I remember reading on ballet was Giselle 🙂 x

I’m so glad I followed Karen D.D. to your story. So very sweet. I’m coming back later to read more. My daughter took dance as a way to gently exercise her tiny body but didn’t enjoy performing all that much. I enjoyed seeing each and every one of her performances though as a mother. I hope you get that granddaughter somewhere down the line.

I am so pleased to know you enjoyed this post. I did like to perform when I was a young girl but I became shy as I grew older. Dancing is lovely as an exercise.

I still do a bit of a jig when I hear happy music somewhere. I let my trusty cane be my partner. It never fails to make my kids laugh if they catch me at it. 🙂 Being old has so many advantages. 🙂
