The red devil ballerina

Little Miss Christmas Cracker on the stage in Chocolate Land – I don’t have a picture of a red devil [smile]

When I was a little girl, I wanted to be a ballerina just like hundreds of other little girls all over the world. My mother, being a kind and understanding woman, indulged me in this desire and I attended ballet classes from when I was five years old.

When I was seven, I was a good enough ballerina to participate in the annual ballet concert hosted by my ballet school. My class of small girls were to perform the dance of the ladybird. I am sure you know the nursery rhyme which goes:

“Ladybird, ladybird,

Fly away home,

Your house is on fire

And your children all gone;

All except one

And that’s little Ann,

And she has crept under

The warming pan.”

When the great day arrived, my mother dressed me in my costume, which comprised of yellow tights, a yellow leotard, black ballet shoes, a red and black spotted “wings” cape and a headband with antennae attached to it, and did my hair in a ballet bun. When we arrived at the hall, I was very excited and I remember practicing outside on the grass with the other girls in my group in advance of our stage performance. It all went well and we left the stage in triumph with no-one having forgotten their steps or tripped over their shoe ribbons.

We were then allowed to watch the rest of the performances. One of the last dances was a solo dance by a girl in one of the highest grades. She did the dance of the red devil and she was amazing. I was totally overwhelmed by how well she danced and by her spectacular [in my eyes] costume. She wore red tights, a red leotard, a long red devil tail and had a pair of red horns on her head. I begged my mother to get me a red devil costume and she said she would try. Not long after that we moved away from Johannesburg and I never got my red devil outfit, but I have always remembered the solo dance of the red devil.

Maybe one day I will have a granddaughter and I will buy her a red devil outfit and we will learn the dance of the red devil together.

      1. A wonderful story, Robbie! In the past (as i was member of the clerical seminary) i had a red devil figure with a black cape in one window of my car. Lol Some of the priests weren’t very amused about. Lol Michael

  1. What a lovely reminiscence, Robbie!
I learned Ballet at school and I was rather Avante gard, even then… My improvised piece at my first show, was me, being a mad scientist… 🤣

  2. What a lovely memory. Maybe you can do the dance of the red devil with your niece one day. It’s funny but I never aspired to be a ballerina. I was the conductor of the rhythm band when I was 6, though.

  3. Love this story of inspiration, Robbie! Ballet is really difficult (my hips have no natural turn out, so no thanks) and to see it performed by a skilled dancer is breathtaking. It sounds like the perfect thing to do with your grand-dot!

  4. At the end of my grandson’s dance recital Saturday night a little girl all in red danced her heart out in a solo. Loved the serendipity of your post with that image in my mind already.

  5. The dance sounds amazing, I wonder if that girl went on to have a dancing career. My sister, baby cousin and I were never interested in ballet, we all just wanted horses, my daughter did it for one term, but my cousin’s daughter and my grandaughter love doing ballet, we have no idea where they get it from!

  6. I bet you were a cute little ballerina Robbie, and who knows one day you may well have a little granddaughter to indulge your wish 🙂
What a lovely memory you have shared, and loved the decorative chocolate 🙂 ❤

      1. My pleasure, Robbie! Beautiful and I love ballet and like you I started dancing at 3 years of age. I advanced to toe shoes at 12, but after that, I didn’t have anymore ballet lessons until I was 32 years old.. I still practice, but not on toe.

      1. Yes they do, Robbie and obviously Thai dancing is what the girls are taught here although some do Muay Thai Boxing and are very good at it….I like The Nutcracker suite also but Giselle was my first ballet and the first story I remember reading on ballet was Giselle 🙂 x

  8. I’m so glad I followed Karen D.D. to your story. So very sweet. I’m coming back later to read more. My daughter took dance as a way to gently exercise her tiny body but didn’t enjoy performing all that much. I enjoyed seeing each and every one of her performances though as a mother. I hope you get that granddaughter somewhere down the line.

      1. I still do a bit of a jig when I hear happy music somewhere. I let my trusty cane be my partner. It never fails to make my kids laugh if they catch me at it. 🙂 Being old has so many advantages. 🙂
