I listened to the audio books of two lovely books for children yesterday. I enjoyed both of these stories immensely.
My review of Spoilt Miranda by Eloise De Sousa
One day, Miranda’s family decide that they have to do something to stop Miranda’s tantrums. The family is about to leave for a holiday by the sea and they put their plan into operation. As a family unit they decide that Miranda’s bad behaviour will be ignored and if she won’t do something for herself, it won’t get done at all. Lastly, if she doesn’t want to co-operate and take part in family activities, she will be left out and remain at their holiday house alone.
Will the family be able to teach Miranda to behave as part of their family and be less self centred? You will have to read the book to find out.
I really liked the way the author described Miranda’s family as being so supportive and kind towards her, even though she can be so naughty and thoughtless. It is lovely to know that the author believes in the power of love and the family to cure Miranda’s naughtiness.

My review of Yua and the Great Wizard Hunt by Victoria Zigler
This is an entertaining story for children. Yua is a small white dog who belonged to a wizard who wanted a companion and gave him the power of speech. Unfortunately, after a short while he became bored with Yua’s conversation and threw poor Yua out onto the street where he is left to forage for himself. Yua is discovered, cold and starving, in a ditch by a kindly wizard, Gwydion, who takes him into his home and adopts him as his own.
Gwydion soon discovers that Yua can speak and is happy to have him as his companion, but not long after Yua’s arrival, Gwydion is kidnapped by some tough men who break into his book shop. Yua doesn’t know what to do until a little girl, Lattie, comes along to the book shop and, together, they discover some interesting information about Lattie and her own magical abilities. Lattie and Yua formulate a plan to help rescue Gwydion from his kidnappers and, along the way, they make some discoveries about Lattie’s own family background and why her mother disappeared and never returned for her.
Gwydion is a lovely, kindly man and you can’t help but to love his character and Yua is also a resourceful and entertaining character who will delight children. Lattie is a sweet girl but she does exhibit a rather vengeful side of herself at the end which could be upsetting for sensitive children.

I agree, Colline. I liked the way Eloise handled this topic, with love and kindness from the family and not anger and rejection.

Two good books. The idea of ignoring bad behavior–it sure worked with my son’s temper tantrums. Even when he turned blue and fell over, we stepped over him. Smart boy figured out the jig was up.

Well done, Jacquie. We had the same problem with Michael. He used to through the biggest tantrums in the world in the middle of shopping centres.

My belief is that spoilt children are made, not born that way so this would not be a book I would put on my list. Talking dogs however are any child’s dream.
