What Amazon says

Summer Magic: Poems of Life & Love is a collection of contemporary poetry about exactly that–life and love. The first part of the book features poems about the magic a young boy discovers while camping in the Blue Ridge Mountains. The second part of the book has a sampling of poetry about love, life and death, autumn, and dreams coming true.

My review

This book comprises the most beautiful freestyle poetry by Marcia Meara. The poetry is divided into two sections, the first is about the magic of life as experienced by a ten year old boy and the second is about love.

I loved both sections of the book but the poems about the joys and experiences of a ten year old boy were particularly poignant and meaningful for me as I have two sons who were ten years old in the not that distant past.

The two poems in this section that I enjoyed the most are, firstly, The Rope Swing which depicts the freedom and joy of swinging on a hot summer day. The depiction of a young boy of ten is very accurate and brings back lovely memories for me.

My second favourite poem is entitled Moccasins and describes the lovely and understanding relationship moms have with their sons.

The Rope Swing

The first stanza goes as follows:

“Sailing up, up into

Blue summer sky,

Hot rope rough against his hands,

He shouts with joy, and lets go.

For a crystal moment,

He hangs suspended,

Frozen in time

Like a fly in amber.”

Moccasins

“His dad smiles.

Moms are like that, Mac.

Moms always know what

Their children want most.

And Moms always want

Their children to have their

Heart’s desires.”

The poem I enjoyed the most in part two of the book describes the beauty of young love and the joy of watching small children play and develop.

The Sound of Dreams Coming True

“Listen, she says,

Kissing his fingers,

As a little girl laughs,

Chasing butterflies

With her big brother.”

Other books by Marcia Meara

Marcia has a lovely variety of well written books.

I have read her book, Swamp Ghosts, and enjoyed this thriller with its additional thread of romance, a great deal.

Blurb

Marcia Meara, author of the popular Wake-Robin Ridge books, sets her second series in the sleepy little town of Riverbend, Florida, where the hungry creatures swimming in the dark waters of the St. Johns River aren’t nearly as dangerous as those walking along the quiet neighborhood streets.

Wildlife photographer Gunnar Wolfe looked like the kind of guy every man wanted to be and every woman just plain wanted, and the St. Johns River of central Florida drew him like a magnet. EcoTour boat owner Maggie Devlin knew all the river’s secrets, including the deadliest ones found in the swamps. But neither Maggie nor Gunn was prepared for the danger that would come after them on two legs.

On a quest to make history photographing the rarest birds of them all, Gunnar hires the fiery, no-nonsense Maggie to canoe him into the most remote wetland areas in the state. He was unprepared for how much he would enjoy both the trips and Maggie’s company. He soon realizes he wants more than she’s able to give, but before he can win her over, they make a grisly discovery that changes everything, and turns the quiet little town of Riverbend upside down. A serial killer is on the prowl among them.

  1. Wow, Robbie! What a lovely review of Summer Magic! Thanks so much for tagging me, else I might have missed it. (I’m WAY behind on blogging right now, though I’m trying to catch up.) It’s wonderful to know that you enjoyed my poems. I have loved poetry all my life, though I don’t write as much of it as I once did. (I was just thinking the other day I needed to get back to it. Maybe after the holidays!)

The first part about Mac (my hero from the Wake-Robin Ridge series) was a joy to write. He grew to love those mountains more than any place on earth after spending his summers camping there with his dad, and I really wanted to capture his memories of those wonderful days.

Off to share this everywhere I can think of! Thanks again!! 🙂 ❤

      1. As you might know, poetry doesn’t garner as much attention as novels do, so it’s really extra-special nice to find a lovely review like this. SO happy, and I’m sharing everywere I can! I hope Michael will enjoy them, too. I’m doing a happy dance now. (Well, more like a happy shuffle, actually, but that’s the best I can manage these days. Still–it’s VERY happy!) 😀 ❤

What a lovely surprise to find my book of poetry, Summer Magic, reviewed today on Robbie’s Insipiration. And what a truly lovely review, too. Hope you’ll check it out, and share far and wide. Robbie, you made my day! Thank so much!! 🙂 ❤

    1. Thanks, Colleen. Because this last year has been so filled with interrutions, I have not been marketing any of my books as I should, much less this one. I really need to get it in front of more poetry lovers, I know, but the time hasn’t been there for me lately. Hope to rectify that in 2019. I’m WAY behind on blogging, too, sadly. Another thing I’m planning to get caught up on! 🙂 ❤

      1. Marcia, I’m cutting back some things. I can’t find the time to write! That’s crazy. After the beginning of the year, I’ll get myself straight too. I totally know what you mean. ❤

      2. Colleen, I know what you mean, as well. I should have my 4th Wake-Robin Ridge book published by now, and I’m only halfway through the draft. I am working on a weekly schedule to help me organize enough to catch up at least a bit. I don’t want to give up ANYTHING, but I’m going to have to prioritize more carefully in the new year. Good luck to you! (If you find any magic answer, please let me know.) 😀

  3. A beautiful review and a lovely selection of Marcia’s poems, Robbie. I’ve been following her blog for a while, and she never fails to be generous with her time, no matter what is going on in her life. All the best.

    1. Thanks so much, Olga! I’m really glad you enjoy following my blog, and I am happy you think well of it. I have been feeling pretty bad about falling down on the job lately, but I’m gradually getting caught back up again. Hopefully, I’ll be able to get some of the old features up and active once more in the weeks ahead. In the meantime, I’ll just keep trying to do the best I can, and you know you are always welcome to share your news or promos there on The Write Stuff. Would love to have you! 🙂 ❤

    1. Thanks so much, Frank. I’ve written free verse almost all my life, though now and then, I write something that rhymes. Usually those are funny little ditties, and none are in this book. I’m glad you enjoyed the snippets, since my poems, like my books, tend to be on the longish side at times. But it takes what it takes to get the message across, right? To make that little snapshot of time standing still come into focus sharp and clear. That’s what I love most about both writing and reading poetry. Will be checking out yours, too. 🙂

    2. Thank you, Frank. Marcia writes wonderful books as well as poetry. I must say though, that having followed her blog and knowing what a kind and lovely person she is, I can’t believe what dark thoughts come out of her mind. Brilliant!

      1. Hahahaha. I was invited to a private book club recently, and boy, did I get questions on how I was able to write a serial killer like “you-know-who” in Swamp Ghosts. I told them I asked my alter-ego. 😀 Seriously, if you ever take even a cursory glance at a newspaper, you find a whole lot of dark things looking back at you. 😯 And I’ve had 74 years’ worth of pondering some of them.

I do, however, hope you notice that I’m a firm believer in love conquering all, and I refuse to pull a “Nicholas Sparks” and kill off my hero or heroine, cheating my readers of an HEA for the characters I hope they’ve learned to love by book’s end. I prefer to dole out appropriate fates for the bad guys, and let my good guys find their way to happiness, even if they have to slog through a whole lot of misery to get there. 😀

        That’s my story–no, really, it is–an’ I’m stickin’ to it! 😀 ❤

      1. Thank you so much, Miriam. I will be sharing my reviews of Colleen and your books next week (Thursday and Sunday, respectively). I am enjoying this readathon and reading such a lovely array of different poetry.

    1. That would be lovely, Mary. I’d enjoy hearing what you think. It’s a short book, somewhere around 40 pages, I think, so a quick, easy read. Plus, like short stories, it’s easy to just read one or two when you have a couple of spare minutes. If you get a chance, do let me know your thoughts. And thanks for taking the time to comment. 🙂 ❤

      1. Oh, thanks so much, Mary! I hope you find some poems that speak to you! (In a good way, of course. 😀 ) And thanks so much for saying you are a huge fan of my writing. How lovely! BTW, No More Mulberries is VERY near the top of my TBR pile, now. You know, I never gave a thought to how little reading time I’d have once I took up writing. 😦 That’s the only down side, so far. Well, except for that bit about having to MARKET my books, of course. But I’m determined to do better with that in 2019. Thanks again for checking out my poetry, and I do hope you’ll enjoy the book. 🙂 ❤

    1. Thanks, Bette! I’m glad you enjoyed those snippets, and I love Robbie’s review, as well. Poetry never gets quite as much attention as novels, so it’s always a treat to find others who enjoy it. 🙂

  4. Thanks for sharing these lovely extracts, Robbie. Marcia has a writing style that captures the essence of things that you’ve experienced but not properly registered before. – those ‘That’s just what it’s like!’ moments. I found the collection poignant and moving, too, but there’s also that light touch of humour that sparkles through all her work. I loved the line ‘A viking in Armani’ – what an image!

      1. Aw, thanks, Trish! I’m so glad you enjoyed my poetry. It holds a special place in my heart, for sure. I so often think of poems as little snapshots of moments frozen in time, and (hopefully) bringing recognition to those who read them. I love when certain lines jump out a reader, like that “viking in Armani,” one. That makes me very happy to hear!

And thanks for agreeing with Trish, Robbie. You folks have uplifted my spirits, after a long, frustrating, and annoying month of various issues interrupting my life. I was having trouble even thinking about writing, much less moving on with it. But today, I feel like I’ll be in a perfect place to resume work, if not before Christmas, certainly right afterward. I’ve got a veritable caldron of ideas bubbling up now! You may have created (or at least inspired) a monster! Be afraid. Be very afraid. 😯 😀

    1. Thanks, Annika! I’m so glad you enjoyed the snippets. That little boy who’s “hanging suspended, frozen in time” is about to take a cold, cold plunge into a pool of icy mountain water. A robe swing over a pond is one of the best treats of summer, especially if you are ten years old and camping with your dad. 🙂 And Robbie’s review made me smile all day yesterday, for sure. In fact, I’m STILL smiling! 🙂

      1. Woohoo, Deb! Can’t wait to hear what you think of the Middle Child in this series of novellas. Hope you enjoy it! And thanks for the kind words about Summer Magic. I just may have another book of poems in the offing before too long. (I guess that means I’ll have to write a few. 😀 😀 😀 ) ❤
