Danielle, over at Books, Vertigo and Tea blog recently wrote a post about her ten favourite book villians. You can read her fabulous post here: https://booksvertigoandtea.com/2018/04/11/10-times-authors-nailed-it-with-fictional-villains/
I thought it would be fun to add my two pennies worth and list my five favourite children’s book villians and here they are:
- The Snow Queen from the Hans Christian Anderson book of the same name. An evil devil creates a magic mirror which makes everything it reflects evil and dark. The mirror breaks and tiny slivers explode into the atmosphere, affecting whoever and whatever they come into contact with. Kay, a small boy, is unfortunate enough to have a sliver of the glass enter his eye and his heart. His personality changes and, as a result of this change, he is kidnapped by the Snow Queen. His friend, Gerda, sets off on an adventure to save her friend from his captor.
2. Delores Umbridge from Order of the Phoenix by J.K. Rowling. Delores Umbridge is a sadistic witch who is very cruel to Harry when she takes over as the professor of Defense against the Dark Arts at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Her nasty, tight little smile just makes my stomach turn over with dislike. Later on in the book, Professor Umbridge takes over as High Inquisitor and Headmistress of Hogwarts when Professor Dumbledore is fired.
3. Smaug the dragon from The Hobbit. Smaug is a greedy and clever dragon who defeated the dwarves ancestors many years previously. When the dwarves and Bilbo discover a secret entrance into Smaug’s lair, they rile him up and he takes his ire out on the men of Laketown. Smaug is defeated by the black arrow of Bard the Bowman.
4. The Diamond Duchess from The Rescuers by Margery Sharp. The Diamond Duchess is an evil woman who is using a small orphan girl to try to retrieve a missing diamond. Two mice, Bernard and Bianca, set off on a mission to save the little girl. The Disney film of the same name is based on this book and the character of Medusa is modeled from the Diamond Duchess.
Tomorrow is another day from the film of The Rescuers
5. Captain Hook from Peter Pan by J.M. Barrie. Captain Hook is an evil pirate who lives in Neverland and is determined to destroy the mischievous and free-spirited Peter Pan. Captain Hook is the captain of the brig, Jolly Roger. Captain Hook’s two principle fears are the sight of his own blood and the crocodile who pursues him after eating the hand cut off my Peter Pan.
An extract from the Disney film, Peter Pan, that features Captain Hook:
Who is your favourite villain from a children’s book? Let me know in the comments.
Robbie
Mine would be Gaston in Disney’s Beauty and the Beast.

Thank you, Frank. Yes, Gaston is rather an awful rogue.

Robbie, a great selection here! I read Hans Christian Anderson’s books numerous times and the Snow Queen stayed with me, striking cold fear into me!

Thank you, Annika. The Snow Queen is a really sinister character. I also like Hans Christian Anderson and also the Brothers Grimm.

Love your answers, Robbie. 💜
My girls are really into musical theatre and we like to take a trip to the west end in London when we can. One of my favourite shows, adapted from a book, is Matilda and Miss Trunchbull has got to be my favourite villain. She’s just awful lol! 😂
Have a great day. ☀️
Hayley 💕

Oh yes, Hayley. Miss Trunchbull is very mean and evil. A great choice.

Wonderful choices Robbie.. Nothing like an evil Snow Queen I remember The Child Catcher from the film/book Chitty Chitty Bang Bang one that haunted me. Ian Fleming had a flare for suspense even in Children’s Books 🙂
I watched Mirror Mirror film with my Grandaughter and I think the wicked stepmother often plays the villain 🙂
Great to catch this Robbie and pleased you sorted your other site logo connection out. 🙂 xxx

Thank you, Sue. The child catcher – yes, I also remember him. I have read the book and watched the [excellent] movie and he was incredibly horrible and scary. Great choice, Sue. Thanks again for pointing out that the blog link was missing on my Bake and Write avatar. I appreciate it.

Your welcome and pleased you also enjoyed the movie 😀 xx

wonderful choices, all. i’ve also always enjoyed the villians in roald dahl’s books, the children and animals always seem to be the good guys in his books and the adults are generally without and wits or kindness.

Yes, you are right about that. Roald Dahl has some great villains like the aunts in James and the Giant Peach and Mr and Mrs Twit.

My favourite would have to be The Red Queen from Alice in Wonderland. Scariest though is that child catcher from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, I still peek from between my fingers when he appears on screen!

Alice in Wonderland is my favourite Disney movie and I do love the Queen of Hearts and “off with their heads.”

Hi Robbie. I agree with you regarding Captain Hook, Smaug and Dolores Umbridge but Voldemort and Saruman (Lord of the Rings) are probably my top two villainous characters.

Your choices are also excellent, Kim. Greg’s first choice is Saruman too.

I love this, Robbie! Your choices are excellent ones. I would like to add Snow White’s evil stepmother. “Mirror, mirror on the wall…”

Yes, she is also really evil. The poisoned apple was really treacherous. One I also left off was Blue Beard. That story was really scary too.

Ooo, he was wicked, too!

What a great collection. I know almost none of these. I have no idea who my favorite would be but I’ll be thinking on it!

I have noticed, Jacqui, that the popular children’s books are different in the US. I am learning a lot about them through other bloggers.

I love your choices! Umbridge was a great villain. She LEGITIMATELY made me so angry!! (which means she was written really well! Lol!)

Fantastic Robbie and I am with you on the Snow Queen… Also the evil step-mother in Cinderalla…xx

You are right, Sally, the evil stepmother in Cinderella was awful. The two stepsisters were also cruel and mean.

My worst Roald Dahl villain was the Grand high witch in The Witches. Horrible!

Cruella de Vil – just think what she was going to do with those poor puppies!

I had nightmares after being taken to see Walt Disney’s Sleeping Beauty – only the second time I’d been to a cinema! The wicked fairy was coming down my front path. Strangely I still love Tchaikovsky’s Sleeping Beauty Waltz.
But from an actual book I’m with Mary for choosing Cruella de Vil – it was decades before I realised her name comes from cruel devil…

Yes, the name was very clever. I also like Tchaikovsky but you are definitely right about Maleficent.

The witch in Narnia for sure. She is the wickedest one I know.

I think the creepiest aspect is the way she exploits Edmund’s sweet tooth.

Loved this Robbie. I was going to go with Sue’s – the child catcher in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. but I’ll say Cruela Deville (?) from 101 Dalmations

Yes, I had forgotten about the child catcher – very evil and scary.

The Snow Queen is such a classic, Robbie. I remember being so worried for Kay and Gerda when my mom read it to me. A wonderful pick. Disney has lots of great villains. A couple of my favorite are Maleficent from Sleeping Beauty, and the Wicked Witch of the West from the Wizard of Oz. 😀

Thanks for joining in Diana. Maleficent is also one of my favorites and I did think of the “wicked witch of the West” from Wizard of Oz after I wrote this. Great choice.

Robbie, I’m so glad I stumbled upon this post. How fun to see the villains featured. 😀 I even knew some of them. I confess I don’t know a lot of children’s stories even though I like “kid stuff” when it comes to TV or movies. Hugs!

These books are all very famous, Teagan, and there are films of all of them. I have noticed that the popular children’s books in the US are different from those in the UK. That is to be expected but I didn’t really know it before.

I suppose so. But this is just me not knowing children’s books… 🙂

My favorites:
Saruman from LOTR
Te Ka from Moana
Stepmother in Snow White
President Snow from Hunger Games
Khan in Star Trek 2
