What Amazon says
D.G. Kaye is back, and as she reflects on some of her more memorable vacations and travel snags, she finds herself constantly struggling to keep one step ahead of the ever-changing guidelines of the airlines–with her overweight luggage in tow. Her stories alert us to some of the pitfalls of being an obsessive shopper, especially when it comes time for D.G. to bring her treasures home, and remind us of the simpler days when traveling was a breeze.
My review
This amusing memoir by D.G. Kaye is all about the difficulties faced by a shopaholic whose idea of travel centers largely around shopping and getting all her fantastic purchases home without paying excess baggage costs. I could relate to this book really well because I am both of the things the author is; I am a germ fanatic and I love to shop. My shopping also comprises of bulky objects because I collect antique and vintage dolls and books. Have you ever tried to pack three teddy bears, two porcelain dolls, gifts for everyone you know and about twenty vintage books into your return suitcase without it being overweight? I have so I can relate to D.G. Kaye’s weakness for shoes and having to get them back home.
I really laughed at the descriptions of trying to make do with the tiny bathroom facilities on an overnight flight without touching anything. I recently bought my Aunt, who was travelling overnight to Dubai, a pair of soft slippers to wear on the aeroplane so that she would not get dirty socks.
D.G. Kaye has traveled to some interesting places, and it was entertaining to read about some of them and see them through the eyes of a shopper who is focusing mainly on what she can buy. Her reflections on Las Vegas, a city I have never visited, were particularly interesting.
A lovely book which is a light and amusing read.
A great review!!!!

I was very amused by this book, Ritu. Probably because I am also an incurable shopper.

A fabulous review, Robbie. I thoroughly enjoyed the book as well, although I’m not such a big shopper (but what travelled with some!).

I read your review of this book, Olga. I am a shopper although I am very specific about my purchases and only buy books and dolls and bears. I thought is was hysterical because I have been in that position many times.

I meant: have travelled with some! (The snow is affecting my fingers, it seems!)

We were in a hired car in Italy, visiting Deruta, home town of beautiful pottery. I had the urge to buy dozens of Sunflower covered plates and bowls, till I was reminded we actually had to go home on an aeroplane.
I would be most interested in the reflections on Las Vegas as we have relatives staying there and are aiming for a visit – I think I will invest in a pair of soft slippers for the flight.

It is a good idea to have slippers on the flight. Keeps your feet warm and comfortable. My husband did the same thing in Italy, bought a whole set of amazing ceramics and then remembered we had to get them back home.

I’ve never traveled by air to another country, but can imagine how much of a pain it could be. Love this cover!

I feel like I spend half my life on an aeroplane, Jacquie, as I also fly for work. That is probably why I found this so very funny.

Thanks Colleen, I am sure you will find it funny to read someone else’s antics in this regard. You will be even more grateful you are not a shopper.

My kind of book for sure. I came back from Australia with 52kgs of luggage and paid nothing extra. I sell a sanitising spray that I use when travelling as I also have a thing about germs.

Enjoyed the review Robbie. Can totally relate to it. Will definitely pick this one up. I always end up buying an extra suitcase in the destination I have traveled to, to pack all that I have managed to pick up. Each time I tell myself that I should pack lesser stuff while going so I can fill my suitcase on the return but it somehow never works:(

My hubby has got a bit clever now and packs two bags of his half full so that I can fill them with my stuff.

A great review but not a habit I have..I travel light and buy little…I very rarely see anything which really speaks to me and says buy me…I am a really fussy shopper 🙂 But a great review 🙂

“Traveling shopoholic”–what a frightening juxtaposition of words! “Travel” is bad enough these days. Delightful review, Robbie!

Thanks so much again Robbie. It’s truly paradise here. What I thought would be a quiet relaxing holiday has turned into a relaxing but very social holiday with the many new friends I’ve made. Seems as though margaritas are taking over work time LOL 🙂
