I wrote this poem for Sue Vincent’s Thursday Photo Prompt. It has special meaning for me at this particular point in my life. I wrote it as a freestyle poem which is an unusual format for me. I have discovered that I reserve this format for poetry that is of especially great intensity for me in my life. You can join in the prompt here: https://scvincent.com/2017/10/12/thursday-photo-prompt-tower-writephoto/

Perhaps, you should consider publishing a volume of poems?

Perhaps the poetry in combination with the photographs-create an entirely new art form.

How indeed?! And like most towers from literature, ultimately disappointing in some way. The poem, however did not disappoint – lovely, Robbie.
I continue to be impressed by all of the things you do with your life. It seems from here that you’ve grown up and built your own ivory tower that suits you much better — out of fondant! 🙂

Thank you, Madelyn. I prefer to control my own world; other people often let you down even if it is unintentionally.

“Other people are neither for you or against you; they are merely FOR themselves” I’m not sure where I first heard that quote, but it always gives me perspective.
Even for dervishes like you, Robbie, time is a limited resource. In order to keep your eye on your own ball, you must sometimes disappoint another, no matter how much you wish it were otherwise.
But if you do not “control your own world” as you say, someone else will almost always step in to control it for you – and they may take it in a direction you do not want to travel.
xx,
mgh

Very poignant Robbie. I also have a lot of education but probably in the wrong fields so never actually succeeded in the workplace. But you are multi and brilliantly talented!

Nicely written, Robbie. Free verse can be more personal. I wrote mosty free verse before I participated many poem challenges. I should keep a balance of free verse and structured poem forms.

Most the people in my poetry class write in free verse. They write a lot about their life experience, reflection, observation and inspiration.

Michael is sick and is not improving with the medication so I will have to take him to the doctor tomorrow. She will know what to do. Thank you for asking.

Very nice Robbie. I love the way you lay it out, the hope aspiration and why and then how that world is not perfect either,

I hadn’t thought of the ivory tower (academia, as I saw it) as a place of security, but more as an unattainable place. However, who knows what it will turn into attained or not.

I suppose, Frank, it depends what you want from life. I came from a home where there were always money shortages. I guess I always thought becoming a professional would ensure monetary security but it doesn’t as I can see from the position of professionals world wide.

I so relate to that. Often hard work and relentless effort doesn’t equate to success but people like you and I–we can’t resist the hope that it will. What a wonderful poem, Robbie. You’ve brought back memories.

I agree with what Jacqui says…hard work may not lead us to the doors of success but it leaves a deep satisfaction that we have put in the best. Other factors too matter but hope is a great hinge.
Loved how you have articulated the emotion in this poem, Robbie. Stay blessed.

Robbie, I am assuming you were not involved in the scandal, but that you were affected. Don’t let the actions of others bring you down. Best of luck getting through this xx

Hi Tandy, yes, we have all been affected. The atmosphere is very anxious and it makes it hard. I spend a lot of time chatting to junior staff and lifting their spirits which is quite exhausting. It is improving now though and I have committed to stay until May next year to help them over this difficult time.
