#Photoprompt – Ivory Tower [a poem]

I wrote this poem for Sue Vincent’s Thursday Photo Prompt. It has special meaning for me at this particular point in my life. I wrote it as a freestyle poem which is an unusual format for me. I have discovered that I reserve this format for poetry that is of especially great intensity for me in my life. You can join in the prompt here: https://scvincent.com/2017/10/12/thursday-photo-prompt-tower-writephoto/

  1. How indeed?! And like most towers from literature, ultimately disappointing in some way. The poem, however did not disappoint – lovely, Robbie.

I continue to be impressed by all of the things you do with your life. It seems from here that you’ve grown up and built your own ivory tower that suits you much better — out of fondant! 🙂

      1. “Other people are neither for you or against you; they are merely FOR themselves” I’m not sure where I first heard that quote, but it always gives me perspective.

Even for dervishes like you, Robbie, time is a limited resource. In order to keep your eye on your own ball, you must sometimes disappoint another, no matter how much you wish it were otherwise.

But if you do not “control your own world” as you say, someone else will almost always step in to control it for you – and they may take it in a direction you do not want to travel.

    1. I suppose, Frank, it depends what you want from life. I came from a home where there were always money shortages. I guess I always thought becoming a professional would ensure monetary security but it doesn’t as I can see from the position of professionals world wide.

  2. I so relate to that. Often hard work and relentless effort doesn’t equate to success but people like you and I–we can’t resist the hope that it will. What a wonderful poem, Robbie. You’ve brought back memories.

  3. I agree with what Jacqui says…hard work may not lead us to the doors of success but it leaves a deep satisfaction that we have put in the best. Other factors too matter but hope is a great hinge.
Loved how you have articulated the emotion in this poem, Robbie. Stay blessed.

    1. Hi Tandy, yes, we have all been affected. The atmosphere is very anxious and it makes it hard. I spend a lot of time chatting to junior staff and lifting their spirits which is quite exhausting. It is improving now though and I have committed to stay until May next year to help them over this difficult time.
