Sue Vincent has given us the word fading and the photograph above for her Thursday photo prompt. You can join in the fun here: https://scvincent.com/2017/09/07/thursday-photo-prompt-fading-writephoto/. This is what this combination conjured up for me.
Fading
Our holiday
feels long ago
the memory’s almost gone.
I do remember
we had fun
it was warm and the sun shone.
During winter
I can’t recall
the summer’s blazing heat.
From the bitter cold
into the house
I gratefully retreat.
The reverse is true
I must admit
when blossoms announce the spring.
Of winter’s aching bones
and chilblained toes
I can’t remember a thing.
Why is it that
these memories fade
but others stay so bright?
My son’s sweet face
and scrunched up eyes
come back without a fight.
His first lusty cry
before being latched
onto his Mother’s breast.
Are amongst the memories
I treasure most and
which I remember best.

It’s lovely words, Robbie! I too have certain memories that are so vivid even though they were long ago.

It is amazing how your recall some things so very vividly and others not at all.

I think our brain is selective when it comes to memories. We can’t remember everything, for sure!

There is nothing to beat Motherhood, Shey. I was completely overcome with adoration when my boys were born. I didn’t even have the third-day blues.

Thank you, Olga. I was thinking a similar thing when the idea for this poem slipped into my head. I wouldn’t have thought of this idea if it were not for Sue’s prompt.

This is a great question: “Why is it that these memories fade but others stay so bright?” I often wonder the same thing myself.

Hi Norah, I think the very important, momentous times in our life stay vivid in memory. We also seem to recall happy times much better than sad ones.

You are right, Pam, good memories are wonderful things and we all have them. They are the silver linings to the everyday clouds of life.

Well said. I’m thinking of things that fade. Colors in the wash–OK, let’s not worry about those.

Ha ha, Jacqui. My mother would say that I never trouble myself over ordinary, everyday things like washing. My head has always been in the clouds in her opinion.

My vacation feelings disappear immediately! But it’s nice during…too bad we can’t bottle them up and “take when needed”. (K)
