My review

I listened to the audio book of Blood Orange and must say, right up front, that the narrator did an excellent job. I loved this book. It started off really well for me with an very intriguing event that got you right into the story quickly. The book was fast paced and full of action and I though the twists and turns were very good. The book ended up going in a direction that I hadn’t anticipated at all but Don Massenzio really tied the pieces together very well at the end. What appealed to me the most about this story is that it is so very possible. As I listened I could just imagine something like this happening and people having to deal with the terrible aftermath of an attack of the nature detailed in the book. I enjoyed the characters, in particular, Navel Officer Brad Rafferty, a man of great integrity and who has experienced one of the worst situations that his job could offer. The main female character was also very intelligent and determined and I appreciated these qualities being highlighted in a female in the US military. That being said, Maria’s character was very realistic and her contribution did not feel at all unreasonable. I listed to the whole book in three days which certainly highlights how much I enjoyed it because I am easily distracted from reading, or listening in this case, by work commitments and my own writing.

I was a little thrown at the beginning. Firstly because this author’s most famous character, his detective Frank, was mentioned early on and I kept waiting for him to make an appearance later in the narrative. It took me a few pages to sort out who was who, but once the main characters emerged, it all became clear. I did not check out the number of pages when I bought the book as the blurb sounded so interesting, but I finished it in one sitting. A good story with a lot of technical detail – either the author is very familiar with nuclear physics of he did a lot of research. It did raise the question as to what governments do with dangerous ‘stuff’ – how and where they store them. Well worth 5 stars.

The premise alone was enough to make me very interested in Blood Orange.
Don writes a tight gripping story, that seems only too relevant to todays world. Perfectly paced, well researched and well worth reading.

  5. That sounds a very interesting read Robbie.. 🙂 And I have a few Audio books, and loved listening to them.. One can listen while doing baking, knitting etc.. 🙂 which is why I love the radio so much.. Especially listening to Drama.. For you create your own scenes.. 🙂 Wishing Don well with his Book 🙂

      1. Yes, its finding time to SIT and read, and my books are usually by my bed, and I used to read thrillers in years gone by.. Now I try to avoid any kind of conflict.. even in reading material.. I find I get too stressed.. I no longer watch any type of soap on TV or drama that is set to show violence.. And I am finding It even hard to swat a fly these days lol.. And cried when one of my fish died the other day.. lol.. 🙂 haha.. Its good though when you find a real good book..
        I used to love reading Patricia Cornwall Books.. shows how we can change. 🙂

      2. It is amazing, Sue, but you have reflected exactly how I have changed. Maybe it is having children that changes you. That is why I love Sally and Sue’s books – lovely stories about people and animals that make you feel happy.
