This piece of flash fiction was written for Sue Vincent’s Thursday photo prompt. You can join in the fun at this link https://scvincent.com/2017/05/18/thursday-photo-prompt-inside-out-writephoto/.
The young woman sat in her rocking chair gazing out of the window. The baby clutched in her arms continued to scream. His little face was red and screwed up with pain. The baby’s ceaseless screaming disturbed her but she still loved her little boy with a fierce love like a flame. Sitting there, she thought of a story she had read a few years ago about a mother who had thrown her screaming baby out of a fifth floor window. She felt sympathy for that woman who had cracked under the stress of a continuously crying baby and an abusive husband. While she adored her little man and could never imagine harming him, she could understand how an additional stress like abuse or financial strain could lead to a complete breakdown by a new mother. She closed her eyes and continued to gently rock her squalling infant.

Somehow, one expected that to end differently.

I am not a violent person even though I had dreadful babies [smile]

I think many new mothers have understood that level of stress.

I agree, Sue. All babies cry.

They do…and with lack of sleep, it can be very hard to cope sometimes.

Thanks Shey, I am sure all mothers can relate even if they have “good” babies. They all cry some of the time.

My story would have ended the same as yours, without violence. I was very lucky, both my boys were delightful babies and rarely screamed even when they were teething.

You were definitely a lucky woman. My boys were both colicky and both had health problems – I used to bath Greg 5 times a day to calm him down [smile].

Shame Robbie. I breast fed mine for nine months before they were weaned and made my own baby food. I think that stopped them having colic.

Nice story. I liked how you ended it after telling us how it could have ended.

Isn’t it wonderful how the glimpse of a photo can awaken characters and a story. I’m glad it ended the way it did. Nicely done!

That was a powerful little piece Robbie. I’m glad it didn’t end like the ‘old story’ 🙂

A friend of mine nearly took a drastic route with her baby who did not stop crying unless he was being fed. She had a toddler and an absent husband. Your story is so believable.

So awful, Tandy, that a woman can get to the end of her tether like that with no intervention. I also had awful crying babies but I loved them to bits anyway. They are delightful now, of course.

I too was expecting a different ending. After saying how she understood what could cause a breakdown, I was frightened that she would then go and have one. Tense piece.

Thank you, Jane. I am a real softy so couldn’t do harm to a baby in a fictional piece.

What a compassionate and heartbreaking tale. Crying babies are so hard and new moms can use all the help they can get, even under the best of circumstances. ❤

You are very right, Diana. I think it does help to share stories and let new Moms know that it does end. After the first three months babies become so lovely and start to respond so much to people. It makes the beginning struggle worthwhile.

My daughter was one of those easy babies, but my grandson cried all the time. My poor daughter was a trooper, but it was hard. ❤

It is really hard, Diana. Your daughter is lucky to have you to help her and make it easier.

I had a very loud scraming baby so can totally relate to this poor mum, Robbie! 🙂

Shame, Judy. It is really tough when a baby cries all the time. You feel so powerless. Thankfully, you and I are past the small baby stage now [smile].

Yes, I have to say I don’t miss the screaming!!! 🙂

Nice story. Babies are innocent! Too sad to suffer as a byproduct of grownup miseries. I was fortunate to have a sweet baby who never scream. I like your ending!
