Q&A with Khristina Atkinson -MTW blog tour

I am pleased to welcome Khristina Atkinson to robbiesinspiration for a question and answer session as part of the Mystery Thriller Week blog tour.

About Khristina Atkinson

Khristina’s love for writing and her vivid imagination first surfaced in elementary school through her poems and short stories.  When she didn’t have a pen to paper, she was busy reading whatever she could get her hands on.  Khristina’s recently departed aunt started giving her romance novels when she turned thirteen.  Thrillers and romance seemed to have always be her favorite genres, and she has managed to intertwine the two in her books.  Love and murder seem to go hand in hand in Khristina’s stories as well as in real life.  Jealousy is most often the driving force.  Khristina’s family has suffered through two murders for this very reason, and she often draws from her real life emotions when creating scenes for her characters.  After covering both the historical and contemporary romance genres in three different series, her next endeavor will be a book of short stories about the paranormal, including a ghost and an alien.

Khristina Atkinson Q&A

Question: What is your latest project?

Khristina: The Seaside Slayer, the sequel in my Killer Attraction Series was recently released on January 11, 2017, and delves into the life and mind of a serial killer. Genny Moretti can’t seem to get away from death.

Obsession of Mine is the second installment in the Undercover Romance Series and will be released on February 10, 2017, just in time for Mystery Thriller Week. The story picks up with Kate Hollingsworth-Collins where I left off last year. There’s a murder in the fictional town of Jaeger Cove, Connecticut, and every character has a motive. I’ve already begun the preliminary work on the final installment of the trilogy, which will be set in the future in the year 2034. The heirs to the Hollingsworth, Kensington, and Carlisle fortunes will be all grown up and causing a lot of drama of their own.

[Both of these series of books sound amazing and I can’t wait to read them.]

Question: What inspires you?

Khristina: The Seaside Slayer was inspired by a short story I wrote in elementary school titled The Seattle Slayer about a serial killer who strangles his young, beautiful female victims. Camille Fairbanks was about to meet her demise, when her handsome detective boyfriend, Brandon Kingsley, prevented her death. I even named the murder mystery writer in my newest book Bradley Kingston in honour on my previous tale.

In my Undercover Romance Series, Kate starts out at the age of eleven years old, wanting to become a spy and be reunited with her parents’ after their tragic death. It’s the most dangerous job she can fathom. She’s quite a force to be reckoned with, and lands a job at the FBI before she’s even legal. I’ve loved James Bond movies since I was a child. I have two sons, so I’m practically forced to watch numerous action and spy movies. Some of them have a really cool female character who can kick ass as well as the male lead. Kate is based on these heroines, but she also has a vulnerable side and is a bit naïve. For her thirtieth birthday in Obsession of Mine, she receives a Skyfall Silver Aston Martin Vantage GT Roadster as one of her gifts. She names him J.B. after “you know who”.

I can be driving down the road, listening to music, and the lyrics will prompt an entire scene. Music has always been an important part of my life. The Killer Attraction Series includes a few scenes with Genny Moretti performing karaoke tunes quite well. This may have come about from memories of my family reunions. My cousin is a DJ and brings his equipment for us to belt out a song whenever the impulse hits and whatever strikes our fancy. Pretty much everyone in my family has a nice singing voice, including me. I’ve brought the house down with Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” a few years back. There was a YouTube video recorded by a cousin and seen by a few relatives, but I never could find it.

[It is fascination to me to learn about what motivates other authors. I have also been inspired to write certain poems based on favourite songs.]

Question: Why do you write in your genre?

Khristina: I label my books as romance with added suspense. My Aunt Rose started giving me historical romance novels when I was thirteen. I’ve always read anything I can get my hands on, but the hundreds, maybe thousands of those books that she’d given me over the years have definitely influenced my writing. My first full-length book that I began about five or six years ago was a historical romance, Wants of the Heart. I actually finished my second attempt in that genre first, Hopelessly, Completely, MADLY in Love, and it’s including in Mystery Thriller Week. This book is about my grandfather’s home state of Kentucky, and there’s a killer hidden among the good people of Bardstown. I enjoyed the stories about lawmen the best, so these tales became the Lovin’ Lawmen Series.

I’ve read my fair share of contemporary romance over the past twenty-five years or even more. In junior high, all the girls were passing around a copy of Flowers in the Attic. I was a library aide in school, and I read every romance or thriller book available. These were the two types of stories I loved the most, and I’ll include movies in this assessment also. My sons hate it when it’s my turn to pick for family movie nights, and they’re forced to watch horror or a chick flick. Somehow I’ve managed to intertwine both into my writing. Give me a psychological thriller with a romance included, and I’m a happy woman. That’s exactly why my writing seems to always involve at least one murder.

[It is a most intriguing combination, but as you state, many murders are motivated by love-hate and jealous emotions so they certainly go together.]
